6:00 p.m. CALL TO ORDER

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS – Susan Van Loon Runnoe
SHOW & TELL – It’s been fun seeing some new turnings inspired by what was learned at the Symposium. So, if you have something new you’ve tried, something you’ve accomplished, something you enjoyed making, or maybe something you are working on and now you have some questions for the group… bring in what you’ve been turning, and as usual, you can ask for critiques of your work, or you can simply show what you have been up to. We can discuss turning ‘challenges’, talk about best practices, and chat about perplexing pieces of wood you would like suggestions on how to turn or what to turn it into. We would like to have members show one of their turnings and once everyone has a chance, additional items can be shown if time permits.

SAFETY MINUTE – Open Discussion – Best practices, what to do and what not to do in the shop.

RAFFLE: An ongoing item on our agenda is our Raffle. If you have any items to donate for the raffle, whether it’s a woodturning book, a piece of wood, a pen or bowl blank, a tool you don’t use, or maybe a turning you have done, we would sincerely appreciate the donation. Depending upon the quantity of donations received your item may be saved for a future month’s raffle.

PROGRAM

Sent by Program Director John Skarja:

For the August meeting, we will be discussing what we learned at the AAW Symposium. Over three days, there were ten rotations with nine choices for each time slot, the tradeshow and other events.

We all learned something new. We will talk about our takeaways and sharing some things with the group – it could be a new object, new technique, new tools, etc. We will have some short presentations including some of the below:

Greg Whitaker will start us off. He has a PowerPoint and will do an overview of the Symposium and talk about Dennis Fuge, Hollowing from the bottom.

Next Kerry shares some of his take-aways:

  1. 40-40 grind, advantages, and sharpening guide (with tool and guide to pass around).
  2. Compact lamp that clips to tool rest (pass around).
  3. Texturing and coloring look fun, and Stewart Furini rocks, but I need to practice basics/platters first (not spending $$$ by getting ahead of my skill level).
  4. Lesson after St. Paul on mindfulness and safety.

Then Susan will show some hollow forms and talk about what she learned about using copper.

Doug will bring in his “Big Blue” power carver and compare to the Dremel rotary tool and will show a few things he’s been working on. Jon made Doug promise not to create smoke, so we’ll save the cup burrs for a different demo, but he will give you a chance to try out the power carver with some non-smokey attachments if you are interested.

Bonnie: Talk about texturing wood. Maybe a collaboration with Doug, so some tag-teaming may occur.
