Lake Superior Woodturners November 8th, 2025 Meeting Notice

Lake Superior Woodturners

MEETING DETAILS

Date    SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2024

Time   9 a.m. – 12 p.m.*

Location    NEW SHOP LOCATION, THE DORFMAN CO. BUILDING: 1314 OGDEN AVE, SUPERIOR, WI 54880

This is our first meeting in our new shop location. We anticipate we will be trying different seating layouts, demonstration locations, and will learn what works best for meetings in this location. We love Jeff Dorman’s new space and the ideas he has brought to making it a home for woodturning, wood carving, as well as some other crafts. If you have comments or questions about the space please jot your thoughts down on some paper and give it to a board member.

AGENDA

When you get to the meeting, please sign in so we know who is attending, and wear a name badge to help those who are not familiar with who we are put names to our faces.

Half-hour before the meeting: Meeting set-up (Chairs & Lathe) plus coffee & chatter!

9:00  CALL TO ORDER

PRESIDENT REPORT – Susan Van Loon Runnoe (Susan will be missed at this meeting, she was scheduled to work and couldn’t get out of it. Our thoughts go out to her and her family during these difficult times.)

TREASURE REPORT – Paul Howard: Current balance, Income and Expenses

OLD BUSINESS:

  • Mentoring: Whether you are interested in finding a mentor to help you with a particular woodturning skill, or if you are experienced and wouldn’t mind sharing your skills with others, we want to know. We are trying to match up individuals to expand our talents!
  • Walnut wood still available outside of John Nephew’s building in Proctor.

NEW BUSINESS:

  • Workshop in June See Attachment
  • Summer meeting day change – Due to scheduling conflict at the new shop our summer meetings will be moved from Wednesday to Tuesday evenings
  • NEXT MONTH: Save December 13 on your calendar. We are planning a holiday event, and a special program celebrating our new shop location. More details will be coming, watch your email.

SHOW & TELL – As always, we love to see what you’ve been turning. Do you have something with a unique finish, texture, or color? Have you started turning something for the holidays? Bring it in and show what you have been up to! You can ask for critiques of your work, or you can simply show your turnings. We can discuss turning ‘challenges’, talk about best practices, and chat about perplexing pieces of wood you would like suggestions on how to turn or what to turn it into. We would like to have members show one of their turnings and once everyone has a chance, if time permits additional items can be shown.

SAFETY MINUTE – Open Discussion – Best practices, what to do and what not to do.

RAFFLE: An ongoing item in our agenda is the monthly Raffle. If you have an item to donate for the raffle, whether it’s a woodturning book, a piece of wood, a pen or bowl blank, a tool you don’t use, or maybe a turning you have done, we would sincerely appreciate the donation. Depending upon the quantity of donations received your item may be saved for a future month’s raffle.

Membership – IMPORTANT:

September began of our new year, and if you have not yet completed a new membership form or submitted your 2025-2026 dues payment please get these in as soon as possible. Membership dues remain at $60/year. The money raised by dues helps us maintain our equipment, purchase supplies, and prepare for rent and moving costs when we move to our new shop.
Our club offers many opportunities to learn, including demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and formal and informal training. We provide a safe environment to learn proper safety techniques. We form a great community, and it’s an awesome place to connect with others who share an interest in woodturning. As you all know, woodturning is a great hobby, whether your interest is in turning practical pieces, or if you lean towards creating items with a more artistic flair.
New members are always welcome. Help support your club by bringing a friend who would be interested in learning, sharing knowledge, teaching, or someone who just appreciates great art.
