OLD BUSINESS:
- Shop Update: WE HAVE A NEW HOME!!!
We are thrilled to announce that the Lake Superior Woodturners have a new shop space at 1314 Ogden Ave., Superior, WI 54880!
The move begins right after today’s meeting. If you’re able to help, we’ll be packing up equipment (chairs, lathes, etc.) from Jon’s shop and transporting it to our new home. Come lend a hand—and be among the very first to see the new space!
We’ll also need to schedule another workday to move the remaining lathes and equipment from the storage building on Becks Road. Once everything arrives, we’ll clean off the dust, assemble, and set up the shop. Trailers, trucks, vehicles with storage space, and of course some extra muscle will be a huge help.
A very big thank you goes out to:
- Jeff Dorfman – for tirelessly pursuing a new shop space and sharing his vision with us.
- The Board of Directors – for listening to member needs and seeing the possibilities.
- Greg – for countless hours spent evaluating locations, drafting documents, and keeping communication flowing.
- Jon Stevenson – for generously letting us call his shop “home” for the past four years (and for putting up with our mess, our parking, and our invasion of space!). Susan still owes you a mountain of cookies.
- Stay tuned for details about a celebration event once we’re fully settled into the new shop—we can’t wait to share this exciting milestone with everyone!
NEW BUSINESS:
- Somerset, WI Walnut collection party
- River Birch wood turning request (see email and Susan’s comments)
- Knotty Carver’s of the North Annual Woodcarving Show: Saturday, October 25th, from 10 AM – 3 PM, at St. Luke’s Sport Event Center, 704 Kirkus St., Proctor, MN 55810.
SHOW & TELL – Do you have a hand-made tool you use all of the time that you would like to show off?? Have you been turning something special lately? Bring in what you’ve been turning, and as usual, you can ask for critiques of your work, or you can simply show your turnings. We can discuss turning ‘challenges’, talk about best practices, and chat about perplexing pieces of wood you would like suggestions on how to turn or what to turn it into. We would like to have members show one of their turnings and once everyone has a chance, additional items can be shown if time permits.
SAFETY MINUTE – Open Discussion – Best practices, what to do and what not to do in the shop.
RAFFLE: An ongoing item on our agenda is our Raffle. If you have any items to donate for the raffle, whether it’s a woodturning book, a piece of wood, a pen or bowl blank, a tool you don’t use, or maybe a turning you have done, we would sincerely appreciate the donation. Depending upon the quantity of donations received your item may be saved for a future month’s raffle.
PROGRAM
October Demo “Tool Making” by Romaine Meller
Romaine Meller will demonstrate simple toolmaking. He’ll show and discuss some tools he’s made. Old tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers are the source of the steel. This can be done using common tools most of us have such as files, a grinder, a hacksaw, and a propane torch. Creating custom tools, saving some money, and self-satisfaction are benefits of making your own tools.
Current Board of Directors:
- President Susan Van Loon Runnoe
- Vice President Bill Penning
- Secretary Doug Runnoe
- Treasurer Paul Howard
- Program Director – John Skarja
- Bonnie McDermid
- Greg Whitaker
