  • Election of 3 Board Members whose terms will run from July 2025 through July 2027.

NOTE: For those that cannot make it to the April 12th meeting, we are accepting member’s votes by email. We still encourage those who can to attend the meeting in person, to hear any additional nominations or discussion on the candidates.

We have three Board members whose terms are ending this year and we are looking for nominations to fill these positions – thanks and appreciation to the current Board of Directors, especially the three whose term is ending (Bill Penning, Doug Runnoe and Greg Whitaker).  This election will all be for two-year terms beginning after the May Member meeting, and will serve on the Board until the board elections in May 2027. Duties include monthly Board meetings where we discuss club finances, programming, demonstrations, workshops, club membership, issues, and any future happenings of the Lake Superior Woodturners (and more!). It is a great experience and a great way to impact the direction of our club.  We’ve often been asked what the requirements are to be a board member. Our response would include the following: Someone who…

  1. Is an active and enthusiastic member of LSW with a passion for woodturning and for sharing woodturning with others.
  2. Can attend [most] Monthly Board Meetings – meetings are typically conducted over video conferencing (Zoom) on the third or fourth Monday of the month – the time and day of the month may change depending on Board Member availability.
  3. Is Willing to work as a team to help brainstorm, research, or investigate new ideas,
  4. Has a desire to help recruit new members to LSW.
  5. Shows a commitment to help communicate to members and non-members what our club is doing and where we are headed.

The rules of nomination are simple: feel free to nominate yourself or other LSW member(s) interested in serving on the board (if nominating someone other than yourself, please make sure they are willing and know what you are nominating them for).

See below for a current list of candidates

Remember you will be voting for three (3) candidates for Board of Directors to fill the 2024-2026 terms. If you cannot make the meeting and wish to submit your vote, please send your choice of three of the nominees to dorun920@yahoo.com by Wednesday, April 9th. Doug will bring all emailed votes to the meeting on the 12th to be tabulated with the rest of the votes.

ELECTION AGENDA -Three (3) Members to Board of Directors for 2025 – 2027 Term

  • Open Nominations – any additional members to nominate?
  • Introduction of Nominees, and designation of 2 members to count ballots
  • Distribution of Ballots
  • Collection and Counting of the Ballots
  • Announce New Board Members

SHOW & TELL – It’s now April and we prepare for summer, are you turning handles for tools? Vases for spring flowers? What are your turnings for this season?  Bring in what you’ve been turning, and as usual, you can ask for critiques of your work, or you can simply show your turnings. We can discuss turning ‘challenges’, talk about best practices, and chat about perplexing pieces of wood you would like suggestions on how to turn or what to turn it into. We would like to have members show one of their turnings and once everyone has a chance, additional items can be shown if time permits.

SAFETY MINUTE – Open Discussion – Best practices, what to do and what not to do in the shop.

RAFFLE: An ongoing item on our agenda is our Raffle. If you have any items to donate for the raffle, whether it’s a woodturning book, a piece of wood, a pen or bowl blank, a tool you don’t use, or maybe a turning you have done, we would sincerely appreciate the donation. Depending upon the quantity of donations received your item may be saved for a future month’s raffle.

PROGRAM

Sent by Program Director John Skarja:

“Ray Hyde will do a presentation describing canarywood.

April Program – Work Holding

John Skarja will be demonstrating various methods of work holding. Most turners are familiar with the spur drive and scroll chucks. John will demonstrate a variety of other ways to safely mount and hold your wood blanks. This will include collets, friction drives, jam chucks, variations of faceplates, vacuum chucks and more. Some of these are commercially available and some shop made. “
