This month’s meeting will help you increase your skill and comfort level in using the skew. We’ll start with a brief demo, followed by a hands-on session at the lathe. Here’s what you’ll learn:
DEMO
- How to make various cuts with the skew
- How catches happen and how you can avoid them
- How to sharpen a skew chisel
HANDS-ON SESSION
- Everyone will get to use their skew chisel and to be coached at the lathe
Bring the following for the hand-on session
- Your skew chisels
- A rough-turned cylinder of wood for spindle-turning (grain runs parallel to the lathe bed)
- Be sure the wood is knot-free and straight-grained
- If you don’t have the appropriate wood, bring a roughing gouge, as the club may be able to supply a few logs for this hands-on session
- Bring your safety glasses or face shield
