SHOW & TELL – This month’s theme is Texturing & embellishing. If you have a wood-turned piece that you’ve added texture, embellishing, color … we would love to see it! But, as always, we love to see anything you’ve been turning, so bring in your turnings and show what you have been up to. When you show your pieces you can ask for critiques of your work, or you can simply show your turnings. We can discuss turning ‘challenges’, talk about best practices, and chat about perplexing pieces of wood you would like suggestions on how to turn or what to turn it into. We would like to have members show one of their turnings and once everyone has a chance, if time permits additional items can be shown.
SAFETY MINUTE – Open Discussion – Best practices, what to do and what not to do. (Doug Runnoe)
RAFFLE: If you have an item to donate for the raffle, whether it’s a woodturning book, a piece of wood, a pen or bowl blank, a tool you don’t use, or maybe a turning you have done, we would sincerely appreciate the donation. Depending upon the quantity of donations received your item may be saved for a future month’s raffle.
PROGRAM
******
This month we’ve asked Doug Runnoe to talk about Texturing.
We’ll talk about why and when to add texture, where to go for ideas, how and why to use story boards to try out your ideas, and then he’ll discuss some finishing tips. Doug will bring in a few rotary power tools and show the differences. He’ll have carbide, diamond, and stone bits and will talk about what each type is best used for. You’ll learn what destroys bits and how to prevent wasting money destroying your tools.
If you have used a rotary “power carving” tool please consider bringing it in to show, talk about what you like, and maybe what you dislike about your particular tool. Members will get a chance to try their hand at power carving, ands make a story board of your own after the meeting.
Below images are from various artists and are included for examples and discussion.
